Hegazy’s debut strike sees WBA edge Bournemouth
Ahmed Hegazy scored on his Premier League debut as West Bromwich Albion earned a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday to get their 2017-18 season off to a good start.
Both clubs came into the season looking to build on excellent finishes last time out as West Bromwich Albion ended the year in 10th place, while Bournemouth finished in ninth. With West Brom manager Tony Pulis signed up to stay on the touch line until 2019, the Baggies deployed their typical tactic of sitting back, conceding possession and trying to hit on the counter-attack. New signing Jay Rodriguez, who made the move from Southampton, was all over the field and created several quality chances.
The lone goal, however, came on 31 minutes as Chris Brunt swung in an excellent free kick to the far post. Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic decided to remain on his line and Hegazy rose highest to nod it home.
Bournemouth sent Jermain Defoe into the fray on 64 minutes to try to find an equaliser, but the West Brom defence held firm to claim three points on opening day.
