Scouting Report

There are many questions that will almost certainly be running through Giles' mind as he waits to hear his name called at the draft. What if I didn't tear the ACL, MCL and meniscus in my left knee in 2013? What if I didn't tear the ACL in my right knee in 2015? What if I didn't need a third knee surgery to clean out scar tissue that delayed my Duke debut? Without those two devastating injuries in high school, there was a good chance Giles would have left the Blue Devils after one season as a top contender to be taken with the No. 1 overall pick. He still decided to enter the draft after playing one season in college, but now Giles will most likely not know where he's headed until late in the first round. The fact that he's still considered a first-round pick shows his level of talent and proves that teams aren't going to be scared off by those injuries. If Giles stays healthy, he could be the steal of the draft due to his explosive athleticism and frame. Giles' measurements at the NBA draft combine were impressive. He was among the top forwards in wingspan (7 feet, 3 1/4 inches), height with shoes on (6-10 1/2), hand width (10.75 inches), hand length (9.5) and body fat (5.2 percent). Of course, those have nothing to do with his knees, but he also performed well in lane agility time (11.08 seconds) and the shuttle run (3.00). Giles didn't play his first game for Duke until Dec. 19, and he wasn't a big part of the team. He averaged just 11.5 minutes and scored 3.9 points per game on 57.7 percent shooting (45 of 78) while pulling down 3.8 rebounds in 26 contests - including six starts. Those numbers don't translate to a first-round selection, but teams are going to take a chance on Giles with the hope he can return to the form that made him the No. 1 recruit in the 2016 high school class.
